Construction Industry Opioid Awareness Week 2018 - Kick Off

July 23, 2018

The Construction Industry Opioid Awareness Week 2018 kicked off this morning with a Press Conference lead by Representative Jason Ortitay (R-Washington/Allegheny) and hosted at the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades District Council No. 57. During the event, several speakers gave personal reflections on how the opioid epidemic has impacted their lives as well as staggering statistics about the problems in Pennsylvania.

The Western Pennsylvania Construction Industry Drug Free Partnership (WPACIDFP) program was discussed for its longevity and ability to evolve and lead the way in the last 20 years of substance abuse testing in Western PA.

Employee/Member Assistance Program resources were also discussed to illustrate the full circle support that is critical to making positive life-saving changes for people who are struggling with active addiction.

Many resources that are available from the National Safety Council on this topic were presented and are available for individuals as well as organizations who want to continue or begin a conversation about changing the culture and reducing the stigma of addiction.

Some of these resources can be found @

IWEA will be providing information as well as resources to our membership throughout this week and into the future, so that the Contractors in our region can continue to provide informed leadership that places the highest value in the safety and success of our people every single day.
